BAGO DIVISION – Truck drivers reported that they are charging up to 50,000 kyats to get trucks through the gate quickly at the Nyang Kha Shay checkpoint on the Yangon-Mawlamyine road in Nyaung Kha Shay Village, Waw Township.
This November, due to tightening of inspection on traffic at the checkpoint, hundreds of trucks are blocked almost every day, so the junta council and traffic police are demanding money and clearing the way for those who want to pass quickly.
“We know that the price is between 40,000 and 50,000. It is lower when there is a large number of vehicles paying to cross the gate. Those who could afford it don’t waste time waiting. Many cars often have to wait overnight,” said a truck driver.
According to the current military situation, there are reports that the PDF will attack the junta council camps in Waw Township, including the Nyaung Kha Shay checkpoint, so the inspection is tightened.
He said that at the Nyaung Kha Shay Police Station, passenger vehicles and private cars are only checked normally, and cargo vehicles are checked in detail, so cargo trucks have to wait overnight.
It is reported that in the inspection of such cargo trucks, only those coming into Bago Division from Mon State are strictly checked, while the cargo trucks that will pass from the Bago side to Mon State are not inspected.
Sometimes, because there are many large trucks and the road is blocked, small cars, ambulances and passenger vehicles have to wait for hours to pass through the checkpoint.
