MYANMAR – 392 women were killed and 541 women were arbitrarily detained by the junta council in Myanmar in 2023, according to the statement by Burmese Women’s Union (BWU).
The victims were killed by the air and artillery strikes of the junta council, tortured to death after being arbitrarily detained or were part of the civilian casualties in battles, stated BWU.
33 women were killed just last December alone and it is said that the highest number of victims were from Rakhine State, Karen State, Mandalay Division and Sagaing Division, according to the data by BWU.
An official from BWU informed that the major cause of death was air and artillery strikes from the junta council.
There were also cases where the women remaining in the villages during the junta offensive were brutally raped and killed by the junta forces with most of those cases happening in Sagaing Division.
In addition, according to BWU, 318 of the 541 women arbitrarily detained by the junta council were sentenced to prison and they were detained under allegations of posting anti-junta contents online or having connections to the revolutionary forces.
BWU informed that the data is based on the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) and the free media but the actual number could be much higher.
Since the military coup on February 1, 2021 and until December 31, 2023, 705 women were killed and nearly 3,300 were detained by the junta regime, states BWU.
