TANINTHARYI DIVISION – Locals said that ten businessmen were abducted by junta troops in Tanintharyi Town of Tanintharyi Division.
In the early hours of May 20 and 21, terrorist junta soldiers from Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) 557, based in Tanintharyi township, together with other junta troops from Yebyu Strategic Hill and other forces of more than 20, surrounded the civilian homes in Yebyu village and took away these entrepreneurs.
Those abductees were known to be owners of local businesses – stores, restaurants, edible oil retailers, etc. and they were in their 50s and 60s – seven from Yebyu and another three from Strategic Hill.
One of the villagers said, “They abducted those who own bigger shops and are quite well off. The reason for abduction was unknown. All are seniors!”
These local businessmen were known to be being detained at LIB 557 and a local speculated that (they) might be linked to People’s Defense Forces.
Similarly, in February, more than 20 locals, mostly females, including a retired school teacher, were arbitrarily arrested by junta troops and later on nine of those detainees were charged with counter terrorism Act.
In Tanintharyi Township, numbers of illegal arrests have been climbing after the announcement of martial law after the coup.
