MYANMAR – As the traditional Chinese New Year, which will fall on February 10, is approaching, the demand for Myanmar melons from China is increasing and the prices are good, according to Mongla Fruit Market.
“The purchases paused due to the snow storm in China, but if the quality of the fruit is good, the price will go up,” said a watermelon trader.
It is reported that watermelons are currently selling well on the Chinese side. In China, watermelons are grown all year round, but they are not able to meet the demand of the whole country, so they are imported from Myanmar from early October to the end of April every year. Even during the season for watermelon in China, they usually buy watermelon from Myanmar if the weather is not good.
In the market, watermelon cultivated in Shan region is called Shan fruit and those cultivated in Mandalay, Sagaing, Tada U and middle of Myanmar are called Burmese fruit or lowland fruit.
Shan fruits are more fresh because of shorter transportation period and less sun. Lowland fruits are less colorful because of the sun and longer transportation time, so it’s lower in price.
