SHAN STATE – A resident of Mongmit said that the military council force fired at least seven heavy weapons in the afternoon and night of yesterday, January 14, in Mongmit, Northern Shan State.
“Last night, the junta council was firing heavy weapons every 5 to 10 minutes. Firing is one-sided. We were afraid and had to sleep in the bunker at night,” he said.
On January 12th, the junta council forces fired heavy weapons in Ohngyaw village, Mongmit City, killing the couples and injuring three women, although there was no fighting.
On January 11th, a 9-year-old boy and a woman were injured when a heavy weapon fell in the old village of Ohngyaw.
The Taang army TNLA announced yesterday at 7:30 p.m. that “On January 14th, 2014, the junta council was firing weapons unilaterally in Lashio township and Mogok township, although there was no fighting.”
The Junta Council’s infantry battalions, IB 223, IB 276, and Light Infantry Battalion 348 units, are based within Mongmit township.
KPDF Battalion No. 1222 units under NUG are also active in Mongmit township. In February 2023, these three battalions of the junta council were attacked with heavy weapons.
The Taang (Palaung) Liberation Army (TNLA) also has military activities in Mongmit township and has attacked and captured the junta council’s frontline camps.
Before the coup d’etat, the Shan State Development Party, the Shan State Army (SSPP/SSA), and the junta council used to fight within Mongmit township, but after the coup, the fighting stopped.
