KACHIN STATE – Following the arrests of junta Commander for the Northern Command in Myitkyina, Kachin State, Major General Ko Ko Maung, Deputy Commander Aung Myo Oo, Hpakant Division Commander and several military officers, the junta council is reported to have ordered for the arrest of Lieutenant Colonel Hla Moe, the battalion commander of light infantry battalion 389 based in Kanpaikti, a border town between China and Myanmar.
His arrest is said to be due to him being stationed at Kanpaikti, a main trade route where explosives could be brought into the country.
“Yesterday (July 23), around 60 junta soldiers and Lisu Pyithusit militia from Sadone went to detain Lieutenant Colonel Hla Moe of light infantry battalion 389. He is the battalion commander and is stationed at Kanpaikti. I heard that they are detaining him, afraid that he would run away. Many junta officers were recently arrested for corruption and regarding explosives. Explosives mainly enter the country here, so this battalion commander must also be arrested due to that,” said a source close to the junta community.
A warrant officer from light infantry battalion 321, the officers from the Kazu Village checkpoint and Gandaun Village checkpoint on the Bhamo-Myitkyina Road were also said to have been arrested.
The junta council arrested the Commander for Northern Command, Major General Ko Ko Maung, Deputy Commander Brigadier General Aung Myo Oo, Kachin State Minister for Security and Border Affairs, Colonel Aung Kyi Lin, Hpakant Division Commander, three more military officers and the owner of a KTV in Hpakant on July 14 and 15.
A source claimed that those officers were accused of allowing weapons and ammunition passing through Kanpaite to fall into the hands of the People’s Defence Force.
The position of the Commander of Northern Command vacated by Major General Ko Ko Maung is said to have been given to Major General Soe Hlaing.
