SHAN STATE- Due to the visit of military coup leader General Min Aung Hlaing to Taunggyi, the capital of Shan State, the shops were forced to close, and the shopkeepers reportedly had trouble making ends meet.
The pop-up shops at the corner of Yehtwet Oo Street and Snow White Street, Yeaye Kwin Ward, Taunggyi City were forced to close on May 26 because of the arrival of the military leader.
“At first, they told the shopkeepers to close for 2 days and they would re-assigned the place. They even collected the shop lists. Until today, no shop could not re-open and this could make their living hard for shopkeepers who depend on daily wages,” said a person close to street vendors.
Those pop-up shops are illegal, but they have been paying 15,000 kyats per month to the township municipality.
Such an order to close these pop-up shops may be for security along the road where the military leader is coming, said a resident of Yeaye Kwin Ward.
“The coup leader (Min Aung Hlaing) was staying at a mountain resort. To get there, you have to use Yehtwet Oo and Myasein’s hilly roads. The shops on these roads were forced to close and the police forces are waiting around Aye Pagoda for days and nights,” said the resident.
At present, more than 20 shops, including motorcycle repair shops, betel shops, food stalls, fruit shops, and butcher shops in the Yeaye Kwin Ward and its neighborhood, continued the resident.
On May 29, when the military leader was visiting Taunggyi, no one was allowed to park on the General Aung San road in the city center nor allowed to drive side by side with VIP convoys.
“The coup leader Min Aung Hlaing arrived at Taunggyi City on May 28. He visited the Medical University and places in Ho Pong Town. And today, on May 31, he would be staying at Notel Hotel in Nyaung Shwe Township, Inle region,” stated a person close to the military council.
