YANGON DIVISION – Locals reported that the junta council has ordered the demolition of more than 130 homes in Ward 56 and Ward 70 in South Dagon Township (New) within a month.
On June 23, the junta council reportedly sent notices to more than 130 houses between the Chan Mya Thar Si Road (in Ward 56) and Anawrahta Road (in Ward 70).
In the notice, it is stated that the land belongs to the Municipal Development Committee and that the squatters must be removed by July 22nd, stated the local.
“These lands are actually farm land and do not belong to the Municipal Development Committee. It is also inconvenient to move during the rainy season. Most people living on the land are manual laborers. Junta soldiers, police, the municipal officers and ward administrators were all there at the time of giving out the order. We still don’t know where to move yet,” said a local.
Most people living there are from the lower social class and hold the (encroachment) Smart Card issued by the NLD government. Currently, more than 700 people are living in more than 130 houses on that land, and some reportedly have household registrations.
Last June 18, more than 30 residences and shops at the intersection of Theinkyaung and Ayeyarwon Road in Ward 65, South Dagon Township, were demolished by the junta regime for allegedly trespassing on municipal land.
