TANINTHARYI DIVISION – On the morning of November 4, a riot was said to have broken out in Dawei Prison, according to the people who have close acquaintances in prison.
Around 7 a.m. on November 4, a prisoner of conscience who went into the kitchen to take rice at breakfast time was slapped twice by a prison staff, as said by the people who have close acquaintances in prison. However, the reason why he was slapped is still unknown.
The prisoners were not satisfied about the act of physical abuse so they went to the hostel officer and complained about it but the officer refused to solve the issue. As a result, a riot broke out in prison, as said by the people who have close acquaintances in prison.
“The riot became chaotic when many prisoners came out of their cells,” said the people who have close acquaintances in prison.
The shouting from the riot was even heard outside the prison, according to a person who was near the prison.
The prison staff held police batons and went to the cells to stop the riot. After thirty minutes, the situation became stable but the prison staff carried some prisoners including the prisoners of conscience to the wicket gate of the prison.
In Dawei prison, the prison staff have frequently beaten and tortured the prisoners during this year. The prisoners of conscience in prison have requested the revolutionary forces to take action on the prison staff by writing letters.
On November 1, two prison staff of private rank from Dawei Prison were shot dead outside the city. After that case, some prison staff have run away while some patrolled holding the guns and tightened the security of the prison.
Dawei Prison has the most numbers of prisoners of conscience in Tanintharyi Division. About half of the 1000 prisoners there are prisoners of conscience.
