TANINTHARYI DIVISION – Family members of the detainees and sources close to the prison reported that the prisoners at the male cells in Dawei Prison have been falling sick en mass.
The number of sick cases rose starting the last week of December and there are sick prisoners in every cells, according to a source close to the prison.
“Maybe it’s flu. There are over ten sick people in one cell. Around three or four of them are even vomiting,” said the source. He continued that up to around 15 people are sick in a cell that contains around 50 people.
Family members of the detainees shared that the prison had not provided sufficient or effective medical treatment. As a result, the sick prisoners reportedly have to request their families to send in medicine.
“We have to buy medicine from outside and send them. We have to send in larger portions so they can share it with others,” said a family member.
There is only a small clinic in Dawei Prison and the prison authorities would only transfer the inmates who require emergency treatment out to Dawei General Hospital.
Just last October, a political prisoner from Launglon died on the way to the hospital from the prison clinic after suffering from heart attack.
There are over 1,000 prisoners in Dawei Prison and nearly half of them are prisoners of conscience.
