TANINTHAYI DIVISION – After the killing of 2 prison staff, family members of inmates said that the prison staff did not show authoritarian action and no longer growl at those who sent parcels to the prison.
“They talk very sweet now. They even invite us to wait inside since it’s going to rain. Previously, they didn’t care if there was even a storm outside” a woman from the family of inmates said.
Family members of the inmates said that the change in the relationship between the prison staff became apparent last week when the Public Defense Forces shot and killed two staff at the new prison under construction in Dawei.
In the past, the family members of the inmates who were sending parcels to the prison were treated with disdain. It was done by the staff, from roaring with authority to dropping the token paper and asking them to pick it up on the ground.
A family member of an incarcerated political prisoner shared his experience that when receiving a parcel, it seemed as if he had been ordered from above to settle things.
Last month, before the two employees were shot dead, political prisoners in Dawei prison had sent an open letter to revolutionary groups asking for help in taking action against the prison authorities.
In addition, some of the family members of the prisoners asked the revolutionary groups not to be silent about the prison.
According to people close to Dawei Prison, after the sending of open letters and the killing of staff, some of the prison staff are no longer seen outside the prison.
Eyewitnesses said that these days, some prison staff are standing guard in the prison compound with automatic rifles.
A political prisoner who was imprisoned for more than a year in Dawei Prison said, “If they are doing the right thing from the beginning, there is nothing to fear. In the case of the Parcel Department, instead of making the families comfortable, they do the same thing as a dictator, make it difficult to suppress. They reap what they sow.”
