TANINTHARYI DIVISION – It has been learnt from the residents that the incidence of Dengue is rising with the onset of the rainy season.
The dengue fever started before the rainy season and there had been patients who were admitted to the hospital but the incidence is significantly getting higher since the rainy season began, according to the locals.
One doctor from Dawei stated, “There are so many cases this year and there are also many patients in the hospital as well as in the clinics.”
The children are mainly affected and there are cases in almost every ward and village. There have also been cases happening in the elderly during last May in Dawei, as reported by the locals.
One local stated, “There are more mosquitoes especially after the heavy rains. In my opinion, these mosquitoes are the ones that cause dengue fever.”
Charity associations are collecting donations and spraying mosquito repellent in homes in the wards.
However, residents added that the spraying of mosquito repellent caused the mosquitoes to fly away shortly after spraying but they return not long after.
Dengue fever is transmitted by mosquitoes and the disease can go away after mild symptoms, like common influenza but it can also be life threatening.
