MYANMAR – The Karenni displaced people who have fled from the junta council’s airstrikes into Thailand are worried of being sent back. Thailand has allowed them temporary shelter but there are rumours swirling around that they might possibly be sent back to the IDP camp that was the target of airstrikes.
“We heard that they are making us go back, that they don’t allow us staying here. But, we don’t wish to go back. There are living arrangements for us here,” said Ms. Wimal, a displaced woman.
It has now been over a month since said IDPs have crossed into Thailand and they are made to stay in tents at a place permitted by the Thai government.
The IDPs are worried that they will be sent back as the terrorist junta is still shelling and conducting airstrikes in the area around their previous camp.
“Personally, I don’t wish to go back. I don’t care if we get help from UN or are allowed to go overseas or not. I just want a safe place for us. Being told to return, I really don’t want that,” said an IDP woman around 30 years old.
Currently, the Karenni IDPs are banned from leaving the camp and they have to rely on donors for their meals.
As per the chair of the camp administration, Naw Mu Thaw, Thailand authorities have not said anything about extending the stay of the IDPs or sending them back.
“As for the Thailand government, they haven’t been clear about this matter. They didn’t say that they will allow the IDPs to continue staying there either. So, we also cannot do anything,” said Naw Mu Thaw.
According to collected data, there are currently 3,886 displaced people taking shelter in Thailand from the Daw Noh Ku IDP Camp.
