THAILAND – Despite gaining support from the people of Thailand, Pita Limjaroenrat, a Member of Parliament from the Move Forward Party, did not receive enough votes in Parliament to become the Prime Minister of Thailand.
In order to assume the role of prime minister, Pita needed a minimum of 375 votes out of 750 representatives. This includes 500 representatives from the lower Parliament and 250 representatives from the upper Parliament, who are appointed by the Thailand Military and the King.
The Move Forward Party put forward Pita as their candidate for Prime Minister in Parliament. However, he only managed to secure 323 votes in favor, while 189 votes were against his appointment, and 198 representatives abstained from voting. Consequently, he was unable to attain the position of Prime Minister.
Many members of the upper Parliament criticized Pita, accusing him of attempting to alter the King’s system and being involved in separatist activities in the southern region of Thailand.
A new election for the Prime Minister is scheduled for July 19, which presents another opportunity for Pita to vie for the position.
