SAGAING DIVISION- According to residents, most detainees in Tigyaing, including women, have not been released after more than a month under junta’s detainment.
On February 1, the locals living near Tigyaing Town were arrested when they returned to their villages thinking that the area was peaceful.
“They were going back homes checking out their belongings, providing that the area was conflict free for some time. They were detained by junta troops among which the elderly were released. Young people who can be asked to run errands are still detained “said a member of Tigyaing PDF.
It is said that locals of Zeegone and Padauk Hla Villages, which are only 2 miles away from Tigyaing were among the detainees.
Most of the detainees are locals from villages, but the exact list of how many males and females are being detained is not yet known.
“None of the detainees is from the city. People living in nearby villages outside the city, returning their homes with their families were arrested,” said a PDF member.
According to the revolutionary forces, the junta army has been conducting airstrikes every day since the revolutionary forces began offensives to take over Tigyaing on November 10, 2023. About 98 percent of the city’s buildings have been destroyed, and more than 120 civilians have been killed by the junta’s airstrikes.
Locals said that there is no fighting in the downtown area of Tigyaing at the moment.
