YANGON DIVISION – The Dagon University Students’ Union announced that the Insein Prison Court sentenced the Central Executive of the Dagon University Students’ Union, Ms. Wut Yi Aung, to an additional 4 years’ imprisonment on June 27.
In 2021, she was arrested by the military council on September 14 and initially sentenced to 3 years in prison under Section 505(a), and on June 27, she was sentenced to an additional 4 years in prison under Section 52(a), bringing the total to 7 years in prison.
Currently, Ms. Wut Yi Aung is being held in Insein Prison, and is being subjected to unjust oppression in the prison and torture. The union said that her health condition is deteriorating due to the injuries she suffered during the interrogation.
The Dagon University students who were unjustly arrested along with Ms. Wut Yi Aung, Ms. Thinzar Zaw (b) Ms. Zaw was sentenced to 13 years in prison and Mr. Sithu Aung Tin, 10 years, Mr. Ye Lin Oo (Archaeology – second year) was sentenced to 10 years in prison under Section 505-A and Article 52(a) of the Anti-Terrorism Act and a total of 10 years in prison. History major student Mr. Nay Htet Lin has been sentenced to 3 years in prison under Section 505-A.
Many of the current Dagon University students were arrested by the Junta’s Council. According to the statement, Mr. Thiha Htet Zaw, Mr. Thura Maung Maung, Mr. Hein Htet, Mr. Khant Zin Win, Mr. Zaw Lin Naing, Mr. Thet Paing Oo and Mr. Khant Lin Maung Maung were sentenced to death by junta council’s Court.
After the coup, a total of 157 people have been sentenced to death, including 42 people who were sentenced to death in absentia by the military council, according to a statement issued by the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners-AAPP.
