MANDALAY DIVISION – Fearing the possibility of getting attacked by drones from People’s Defence Forces, the junta forces are delaying the inspection of the vehicles on the pretext that the X-Ray machine is over heated at the Kywel Tat Hson checkpoint in Thazi Township, Mandalay Division, said the drivers.
That Kywel Tat Hson checkpoint is checking the vehicles that came down from southern Shan State, and going to Yangon and Mandalay. Any vehicle will be asked to go through an X-Ray machine.
Usually there were many vehicles at the checkpoint before, but there wasn’t a need to wait in line like this. Only now when the fighting is intense, they used the excuse that the X-Ray machine is overheated to delay the inspection so that there will always be cars at the checkpoint. “We heard that they are making cars wait in groups in fear of being attacked by drones. They are holding the people as hostages because they are afraid of death,” said a driver.
He continued that the cars had to wait and stand in line overnight and for two days, and when the price of fuel was high, it was inconvenient for the cars to wait in line on a hill road and the cars used up more fuel as they had to keep the engine idle while in the queue.
The inspection time is also not regular, ranging from half an hour to one hour and if they suspect a car, they usually check it with spikes.
A lorry driver said that in addition to increased fuel consumption, as they had to wait a long time, the fresh goods to be sent to Yangon, Mawlamyine and Myawady were also damaged.
“We harvest the goods in the yard and load them on trucks on the same day, then leave for delivery in the evening. We have to enter Yangon by the next morning. For Mawlamyine and Myawaddy, we have to drivev to reach there in the evening. Now we can’t drive like that anymore. Traders suffer as well as farm owners,” he said.
It is said that the drivers also have to pay money for the X-ray machine. For trucks, they have to pay from 500 to 5,000 Kyats while those carrying coal and metal have to pay from 5,000 to 10,000 Kyats.
