KARENNI STATE – Defence forces are said to be conducting mine clearance operations in some parts of Demoso to protect the civilians returning to check their homes from the danger of mines.
“The intention of mine clearance is because as it’s now the hot season and the grass has grown thick. And there were houses that burned down but there are also houses that are still standing. So for those who wish to go back home and do some cleaning, we cleared the road so they can walk safely. Around a meter or two was cleared for people to walk,” explained a member of Demoso People’s Defence Force (PDF).
The junta forces that stationed on the main roads of Demoso are said to have planted numerous landmines. As the junta forces have currently fell back, there are some civilians coming back to check on their homes but they are advised to be cautious when walking around the area.
“Just in one day yesterday (January 5), they managed to clear D14 mines, two of them. The junta forces planted those two mines at the same place, at places like intersections. So, take caution in those kinds of places. Also, an unexploded RPG shell was also found in addition to those mines,” said the PDF member.
People returning to check on their homes are advised to avoid places and paths with overgrown grass and to stick to the cleared areas instead.
