In a recent development, the National Unity Government (NUG) of Myanmar has named Sean Turnell, the former economic adviser to Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, as an special adviser to the interim Central Bank. This significant appointment was announced on June 13th, as the NUG exercised its authority under the decree (1/2023), which holds the power of law.
Under the provisions of the decree, Sean Turnell, an esteemed Australian economic advisor, has been chosen to fulfill this crucial role on an interim basis at the Central Bank. This appointment highlights the NUG’s commitment to strengthening the financial sector and seeking expert advice to ensure effective governance.
Notably, Sean Turnell brings a wealth of experience to this new position. Prior to his appointment, he served as a trusted business adviser to Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, displaying a deep understanding of economic policies and strategies. However, his tenure was abruptly disrupted by the military coup in 2022, resulting in his arrest and subsequent detention for nearly two years. Thankfully, on November 17th, Shao Tanel was granted amnesty by the military council, allowing his release.
