KACHIN STATE – Junta terrorists from light infantry battalion (LIB) 12 under Division 33 that is in Nanya Village on the Hpakant-Myitkyina Road abducted over 100 civilians at the village, including displaced people and travellers trapped in the village, on August 24 night, reported the local residents.
A local said that the abducted civilians include around 70 local men who fled the battles to take shelter at Nanya Church as well as travelling civilians trapped en route and two religious staff and explained that “They were used as human shields in the offensives of the junta forces.”
The residents of Kapmhaw and Saihpaya Villages who fled to the church in Nanya Village after a battle between the junta army and KIA (Kachin Independence Army) were reportedly abducted by the junta terrorists.
One male traveler recounted, “I couldn’t talk on the phone the previous night. I had to flee as I couldn’t spend the night at the guesthouse either. I had to spend the night outside Nanya and was bitten by mosquitoes all night. Some drivers also ran away, only returning to the cars later.”
The junta column departed Nanya Village at 4 a.m. on August 25 and the trapped travelers who escaped arrest could continue on their travel but the roads can be closed off again.
Dr. Tu Khawng, Minister of Minerals and Environmental Conservation, National Unity Government also posted on his social media that the junta forces abducted around 100 able-bodied men from among the IDPs in Nanya Village to use as porters.
Previously in May, a junta column marching Hpakant-Tanai had abducted over 30 civilians from Nanya and Khataung Villages as human shields.
