KACHIN STATE- A resident of Nan Yoon Town, Naga region, said that there is a shortage of rice due to the lack of permission to transport goods and due to the destructed roads in town, and the price of rice has risen up to 140,000 kyats per bag.
“We are running out of rice. It’s almost out of stock in all shops. The price rose to 140,000 kyats but no more rice to sell. Fifteen people asking for rice so far today but one bag of rice is left,” said the resident.
This rainy season in July, the road between Nan Yoon-Shing Bwi Yang collapsed (due to landslides) and making it impossible for trucks to travel, and the road would be closed for a month.
In addition, a resident said that the Junta Council has prohibited the transport of rice and fuel to Nan Yoon Township and that there may be famine in town soon, stated a local.
“We couldn’t go by car, No rice and fuel could be imported. In such a bad time and with the destructed roads, the Junta troops and employees would also be starving just like us,” he said.
It is reported that the road segment that is about 5 miles away from Shing Bwi Yang Town has collapsed and is difficult for cars to travel on this road. Nan Yoon Township, which is a part of the Sagaing Division, is an area where food and commodities are transported from Tanaing Township, Kachin State. Currently, fuel shortages are also occurring in Tanaing Town and the price of a bag of rice has risen to 130,000 kyats.
