MYANMAR – When applying for a passport to travel from Myanmar to foreign countries, the junta council has instructed applicants to submit the UID number that was registered by computer in immigration.
On February 24th, Myanmar Passport Issuing Board of the Junta Council instructed that, those who have booked appointment online to apply for a passport must bring their UID (Unique Identification Number) verified by immigration.
“Right now, all the household lists and NIC in the wards are being asked to register for the Smart Card by February 25th. Then people get the UID number from the registration for the Smart Card. I think they are forcing people to do this, that the passport office will only accept the Smart Card -UID,” said a resident of Tamwe township.
The Junta Council plans to use Smart Card-UIDs in place of ordinary national registrations because of the advantages of immediately accessible to all personal information, including the background history of individuals, just by typing the Smart Card ID into the computer. Some technology experts have said that junta is using technology to control the people more strictly.
