BAGO DIVISION – According to the sources close to the prison, the junta council court sentenced lawyer Phyo Wai Wai Myint to ten years in prison under counter terrorism law – section 50 (j) in Pyay town, Bago Division (West).
She advocated over 100 cases of political prisoners in Pyay District, the western part of Bago Division, who had been abducted for opposing the dictatorship. The junta council personnel had kept her under surveillance for a long time.
The political activists mentioned that the junta council abducted her at the prison where the kangaroo court was located while she was delivering a parcel for a prisoner to the prison on November 23, 2022. She was abducted for the allegedly discovering something suspicious prohibited by the prison in the parcel. The junta council sentenced her to imprisonment on June 8, 2023.
“They (junta council servants) took her to the regional command headquarter and interrogated her. Then, she was sent to the No.1 police station. Actually, she was prosecuted under the prison act. After being sentenced to six months for that case and serving the full sentence, they prosecuted her under section 50 (j) and kept her in prison as a prisoner. Now, they sentenced her to ten years in prison,” said a close acquaintance.
The lawyers said that she is unmarried and a breadwinner for her family. The junta council servants let her only a few minutes to meet with her family when they moved her from the custody to the prison.
“They don’t keep her in a normal cell. They have placed her in solitary confinement. She is in poor health as she has been suffering ailments related to the heart, kidney and pancreas since before she was under arrest. She is also not allowed to meet with her family,” said a person who asked for anonymity.
The imprisonment of a lawyer is detrimental for the political prisoners facing trial and there are fewer lawyers who advocate for the political cases, said the family members of political prisoners.
Since before the coup, during the prior government term, she used to assist the political activists, human right activists, farmer right activists and the farmers whose lands were confiscated.
