MYANMAR – Members of the Political Prisoners Network Myanmar (PPNM) launched a campaign called “Don’t Lock Up Our Lives” in order to ensure adequate health care for political prisoners all over the country on April 2.
The purpose of the campaign was to ensure no more prisoners die in the cells due to lack of timely medical treatment, to allow emergency patients to be treated in general hospitals other than prison clinics, and to ensure that there is sufficient medicine in the prison.
“Prisons prohibit the import of foreign medicine. Even if they are allowed, there are many restrictions. It causes a lot of trouble for those who need certain medicine for a specific disease or condition for a long time,” said an official of the organisation.
It was reported that seven political prisoners lost their lives (prematurely) due to insufficient drugs in the prison clinic and delays in receiving treatment at an outside hospital in 2024.
The organisation also requested international organizations and human rights organizations to put pressure on the junta council army and the Prisons Department so that the prisoners can receive proper health care.
