MYANMAR – According to the Political Prisoners Network Myanmar, there are 24,751 political detainees in prisons across Myanmar since the coup and it is becoming more difficult to send them letters and parcels.
Currently, there are difficulties in sending letters and parcels to prisoners due to the restrictions that only family members on the household registration list are allowed to send.
“We still can’t help everyone in prison who needed assistance. We prioritize helping those whose parents can’t send them parcels, those who are in urgent need (such as special medication) and those who really need assistance. We still don’t have the ability to help everyone,” he explained.
In addition, political prisoners are subjected to violence, sexual assaults, being beaten and tortured, being confined to solitary for a long time, and being transferred prisons.
In more than two years of the coup, there were acts of violence in prisons, and 2023 was the worst year of torture, he added.
The Political Prisoners Network Myanmar is currently helping political prisoners from 17 prisons throughout Myanmar.
