KACHIN STATE – A man delivering rice bags donated to the returning displaced people from Kazu Village in Waimaw Township was arrested at the junta inspection gate in front of the light infantry battalion (LIB) 321 at Shwenyaungpin Village on August 11.
The arrested man was said to be from the IDP camp and he was arrested on the Myitkyina-Bhamo Road while delivering 30 bags of rice donated by donors to Kazu Village, according to sources close to the village.
“He was probably taken away on suspicion. The village elders went for him after hearing news of his arrest. But we haven’t received any updates,” said a woman who asked to remain anonymous.
Residents of Kazu Village have been displaced since the resurgence of battles between the junta military and KIA (Kachin Independence Army) in 2011 and only started returning home in early 2023.
It has now been over a month since KIA and junta forces have been locked in clashes along the Myitkyina-Bhamo Road.
Previously on July 17, a man from Maina KBC IDP camp in Waimaw was arrested by junta forces when returning to his own village of Jarpu (Malanyang) to work but was released after three days. Two other men were also rumoured to have been arrested alongside him but it was learnt later that the two managed to escape arrest.
