SHAN STATE – Around a quarter of the Karenni displaced people who fled to Pinlaung in southern Shan State had contracted seasonal flu, according to those assisting the IDPs.
Owing to the rain in recent days as well as a lack of blankets, there have been cases of cold, running nose, cough and sore throats, especially among the elderly and young children, said a person helping the displaced people. “Mostly running nose, cough, sore throat and nasal congestion as well as fever.”
In addition, it is said that the junta council has blocked off the gates at Saungpyaung, Pinlaung, Naungtaya, Tigyit and Aungban, banning the delivery of medicine as well as food essentials such as rice, cooking oil and salt.
“Now, we are not allowed to transport rice, oil, salt and medicine. Even the general grocers in the villages were ordered to close,” said a person helping the refugees.
There are currently around 20,000 displaced people in Pinlaung Township and they are said to be in need of medicine and are also suffering from not having sufficient clothes.
