MYANMAR – The military council has announced that when passports are renewed for those who are going to work abroad, they will be required to submit proof that they have paid their taxes.
The military council has determined that those who hold Passport for Job (PJ) and Passport for Seaman (PS) types must submit proof of tax exemption when applying for an extension.
It has been announced at the passport office in Yangon that you must bring a certificate of tax exemption issued by the Internal Revenue Department.
“They asked for proof of income tax,” said a young man who visited the passport office to renew his PJ passport.
In the current domestic income collection, the tax is 5% if the annual income is between 20 and 50 lakhs, 10% between 50 and 100 lakhs, 15% between 100 and 200 lakhs, 20% between 200 and 300 lakhs, and 25% for those earning more than 300 lakhs.
Just like in the country, the military council will also collect taxes from Myanmar citizens who are abroad, starting from October 1.
The military council has announced that taxes will be collected in foreign currency and in two ways for expatriate Myanmar citizens.
The first method will be collected at the local income tax rate. The second method is to tax 2% of the income.
