SOUTHERN SHAN STATE- The Pa’O Youth Organization (PYO) announced on May 6 that the number of people fleeing the war in Taunggyi, Nyaung Shwe, Kalaw, and other townships has increased by nearly 1,000 in a week.
From the Pa’O Autonomous Region, Hsihseng, and Pinlaung Townships, the number of people fleeing the war was only 71,340 on April 27, but on May 4, it increased to 72,000.
A Hsihseng resident said, “They (the military council) said IDPs can return home. But the junta forces fire more heavy weapons these days. Those who returned also had no water, no electricity, and no food or work to survive there. Adding up the life-threatening conditions due to frequent heavy weapon fire, we turn around on the way (could not return home),” he said.
According to PYO’s statement, there were more than 100 air strikes in a week in the Pa’O Autonomous Region, resulting in 4 civilian casualties and damaging 4 housings.
From January 21 (when the Hsihseng battle began) to May 4, the military council army attacked the Pa’O area 462 times by air and fired 3,178 rounds of heavy artillery fire, according to PYO’s statement.
According to PYO, 87 people were injured, 67 civilians were killed, and 617 residential and religious buildings were destroyed by fire.
