MAGWAY DIVISION- Farmers of Pakokku District, Pauk Township reported that the yield is decreasing because they don’t have time to take care of the peanut fields.
As farmers have to leave their fields and flee to safety when the military forces enter the township, they have less time to take care of the fields. Moreover, the buffalos and cows they left behind feed on the fields, and thus the yield decreases (this year).
“We planted a peanut type called “Pal Lay Myo” that grows for 3 months. The yield was not as good as last year. When the weather is good again, junta columns frequently come into town. We are still harvesting and not yet done,” said the farming woman.
“Although around 1 bushel of peanut crops yields 50 bushels on harvest in previous years, just a little more than 30 bushels are yielded this year. Farmers have no profit and it is difficult for them to make a living,” added the woman.
“One reason for less yield is the inability to plant the crops on time. As junta columns frequently enter the village, no one dares to live there. Junta soldiers, police, and their militia Pyu Saw Htee members usually raid the villages. Locals have been fleeing to safety and could not spray pesticides and herbicides and dig the ground in time, and thus the yield is decreased,” said a farmer.
About 15 villages in the southern part of the Pauk Township, such as Yarkyipyin, Khinshae, Pantawkan, Kyarpankan, Thitnyinaung, and Tinma have planted peanuts could not harvest the crops in yielding time as the junta columns had entered the villages.
