BAGO (WEST) DIVISION – An acquaintance of the prison staff stated that the junta council released 81 prisoners: 77 men and 4 women on Thursday (January 4) at around 1:00 p.m. who had lower than six months remaining on their sentences, from Paungde Prison, Bago (west) Division but political prisoners were not among those released.
“There were no political prisoners who only have around three months left to be released, in amnesty. Only criminal prisoners were released,” a staff from the prison said.
In addition, most of the prisoners released were said to be imprisoned under criminal charges and there were neither military and police deserters nor political prisoners who only have around three months left to be released included in the amnesty even though a list of the political prisoners were collected prior to this.
“We are not feeling safe in our environment since robbers have been released during this kind of economic crisis and less business opportunity. There might be many crimes and robberies,” a local stated.
Moreover, the junta council announced the amnesty order to release the prisoners on January 4 and 9,652 Myanmar prisoners and 114 foreign prisoners are included in the amnesty list countrywide.
Furthermore, it is said that the released prisoners will be imprisoned for concurrent Sentences with priors if they commit crimes again.
