MANDALAY DIVISION – According to local residents, the ceremony that is held annually in the military town of Pyin Oo Lwin was cancelled a few days before the event due to security concerns.
The well-known Pyin Oo Lwin Tazaungdine Festival is planned by the Junta Council to be held from November 24th to 28th in front of Pyaychit Pagoda outside the city. However, when fighting broke out in Nawnghkio, northern Shan state which is very near to Pyin Oo Lwin, the military council cancelled the festival.
“We were informed that it will no longer be held, due to the security situation,” said a member of the hot air balloon club.
Shop allocations for the festival have already been sold and rehearsals have been held.
Although the military council planned to hold the festival, when the battle waves of three brotherhood alliances arrived near Pyin Oo Lwin, where the military academies were located, the event was cancelled.
Because of the 1027 operation, heavy fighting had broken out in Nawnghkio Township in the Northern Shan region, bordering with Pyin Oo Lwin, and the junta council had to use the air force because the ground forces suffered high casualties in those battles.
