MAGWAY DIVISION- Residents said that the military council security gates in Pwint Phyu Township are threatening people, asking for ten thousand kyats to be allowed to cross the border.
The Military troops at the Pwint Phyu checkpoint asked for ten thousand kyats from every one of the passing cars, even though driver’s licenses, vehicle licenses, and registrations were up to date (with no violation of the rule).
“The soldiers at checkpoints in Pwint Phyu are looting in various ways. Even when the documentation was complete, they asked for money one way or another. The worst thing is that they asked for 10,000 kyats for crossing different towns other than their hometown when IDs were shown (as they requested). They don’t simply ask for money but threaten that one can be arrested and imprisoned for not paying,” said a traveler who experienced it himself.
In addition, cargo truck drivers are often threatened and demanded for money. Some car owners said that they often demand hundreds of thousands of kyats for vehicles that do not have their name stamped on them.
However, not only Pwint Phyu Gate but all the checkpoints of the junta army threaten and demand money from passersby, according to residents.
Revolutionary groups are attacking the Military Council in Pwint Phyu Township, and on February 5, the Pwint Phyu PDF planted mines on the military convoy with Magway Chief Minister Tint Lwin traveling.
