BAGO DIVISION – Mr. Maung Di, the 72-year-old MP representing Waw Township of Bago Division Parliament who has been imprisoned at Kyaiksakaw Prison by the junta council, has passed away, according to people close to his family.
He is said to have died at Bago Hospital on July 17 night while getting treated for colon cancer.
“He passed away as he was hospitalized while being imprisoned by the junta council. We heard that his family was allowed to visit him in the hospital,” said a family friend.
The funeral for Mr. Maung Di was reportedly held on July 18 at around 2 p.m. as arranged by the junta council.
Mr. Maung Di competed as the NLD (National League for Democracy) representative for Waw Township and won the election in 2020. He fled to KNLA (Karen National Liberation Army) Brigade 1 territory in Bilin Township, Mon State, after the military coup to carry out revolutionary activities but was abducted by junta forces in June 2021.
The junta regime then charged him under five charges including sections 505, 17(ii) and Terrorism Act sections 51 and 52.
He was imprisoned for three years at Kyaiksakaw Prison under section 505 and facing trial for the remaining charges when he passed away.
