INDIA – It has been reported that the India government sent back and deported 77 immigrants from Myanmar who took refuge in Manipur state, India.
The chief minister of Manipur N Biren Singh wrote on his twitter account that the first batch of illegal immigrants from Myanmar were sent back and deported.
But, the chief minister of Manipur state didn’t express the exact number of immigrants who were sent back.
According to the lists, a total of 77 Myanmar citizens including 51 women and 5 children in batches during March 8 and 11.
On the Twitter account of the chief minister of Manipur, a recorded video of preparing to send back Myanmar migrants was posted.
It was also stated that “even though India is not a signatory to the 1951 refugee convention, we (India) have provided assistance to the refugees,” along with the recorded video.
Those refugees who were sent back are the people who have been detained in the detention centre in Manipur state.
Since the coup in 2021, over thousands of civilians have been forced to flee across the border into the north-eastern part of India, Manipur state.
According to the records by India For Myanmar, there are around 170 Myanmar citizens who have been detained in Manipur state for illegally coming to India.
