MANDALAY DIVISION- The residents reported that junta troops forced shopkeepers in Madaya Market to sell oil and rice at a reduced price, and one shop owner who did not follow the order was reportedly arrested.
On September 6 morning, the cooperate force of the army and the municipality ordered the shopkeepers to sell a pyi of rice and a bottle of half viss of oil for 2,500 kyats each. They also threatened to sue the shopkeepers who did not comply.
“The municipality and Junta forces are waiting for the sale. There is a notice saying how much of the products will be sold at discounted price but people dare not go and read the notice as junta forces were waiting nearby. Many people are standing in line (to buy the products on discount) ,” said a resident.
To control the price of palm oil and rice, the army forced the shop owners to sell it at a set price, and most of the shops closed the sales of cooking oil.
Currently, a viss of cooking oil is sold (market price) at 11,000 kyats, and a pyi of (Pawsan) rice costs around 6,000 kyats.
