MANDALAY DIVISION – The junta traffic police force has been extorting money from civilians even in residential wards in Mandalay, say residents.
“They are trying to illegally detain people even on the streets of residential wards at Myaut Pyin. If the detainees can’t pay money, they are taken to a place where they can exchange money with their phone or other means,” said a resident living in Myaut Pyin.
“They extorted money from me because I couldn’t show my driving license when they asked for it,” said another resident.
If the traffic police couldn’t find any issue with a valid license, they checked mirrors or number plates and extorted money.
At least eight traffic police groups in Mandalay have been extorting money from civilians in Mandalay Downtown.
