MANDALAY DIVISION – The junta council has ordered over 800 shop houses in six townships of Mandalay City to be removed within 15 days, reported the shop owners.
Back in 2007, San Nandaw Construction built shop houses at the high schools in Chanayethazan, Aungmyaythazan, Maha Aungmyay, Amarapura, Chanmyathazi and Patheingyi Townships and the shop houses were sold under contract to the people. Now, 16 years later, the junta council is forcibly evicting the owners to demolish those shop houses.
It is said that the shop owners had been served three eviction notices by the junta council since July 2023. The owners were recently summoned to a meeting by the township education officer on December 5 and asked to move out completely, reported the shop owners.
“These are existing shop houses. Over 800 buildings at various high schools in six townships of Mandalay are being ordered to move out within 15 days. We have to pay regular rent of 20,000 Kyats. We weren’t able to pay since 2021 as they refused payment even though we paid them. This is not part of the rules,” said a shop owner.
The shop houses have been ordered to move out by January 5, 2024. The township education officer reportedly informed that any appeal will have to be submitted to the Ministry of Construction within ten days and a copy must be submitted to the related township education officer.
The shop houses are valued between a range of 30 to 50 million Kyats while some located on the main roads can go up to 100 million Kyats. The junta council did not mention any compensation for the owners at the meeting held on December 19 and only told them that an appeal letter can be submitted between December 19 and 28.
