RAKHINE STATE – United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) announced on June 22 that the military council has forbidden the humanitarian support groups for the victims of the recent cyclone Mocha in Rakhine State.
Due to the decision by the military council, the living conditions of the cyclone victims have deteriorated and they are also suffering flooding and its consequences due to the rainy season.
Currently roofs, shelters and other relief supplies for over 110,000 cyclone victims and food supplies to almost 300,000 residents of Rakhine have been donated as announced by UNOCHA.
The junta council has also prohibited the transportation of supplies of assistance in Chin State and it has been learnt that they are waiting for the opinions of the responsible officials.
UNOCHA has also stated that discussions are underway with the relevant authorities in Nay Pyi Taw and at the state level to be able to support widely to the areas where the support is greatly needed.
UNOCHA has reportedly requested the coalition groups for US$ 333 million to assist the cyclone victims but so far, it has only received US$ 10 million.
In the month of May, there have been over 1.6 million of victims from the cyclone in Rakhine State, Chin State, Sagaing Division, Magwe Division and Kachin State according to the data from the region.
