SAGAING DIVISION – In Monywa City, the price of urgency fees for passports is over 1400,000 kyats, and it has been investigated that bribery related to passports is taking place in cooperation with the police and brokers.
Monywa Passport Issuance Office has a large number of people queuing up to apply for passports every day. However, the police came as usual and only gave around 30 tokens to the passport applicants and sent the rest back saying they had run out of tokens. In comparison, applying for a passport through brokers connected to the police is convenient but costs a lot of money.
“At the Monywa passport office, although it is only 35,000 kyats for official cost, the unofficial price has increased to more than 1,400,000 kyats. The corrupted police and brokers in the office are doing it like a carnival. Now that the Korean job exams are approaching, Thein Than Htay, chief of investigation at Monywa Passport Office, Sergeant Thein Soe and Sergeant Zarni started giving only 30 tokens a day instead of the usual 130, saying they ran out of tokens, they do things like that. As it doesn’t work, we have to work with a broker. The brokers and the police are working together among themselves,” said a person who is applying for passports himself.
Currently, if you apply for a passport normally at the passport office in Monywa, it is very difficult while if you do it with brokers, it costs a lot of money, but it is very fast. After the junta council issued the law on military service on February 10, it is known that there have been crowds of passport applicants.
