SAGAING DIVISION- As the Junta is carrying out arbitrary arrests targeting young people in Monywa town, residents dare not go out and the whole town seems deserted.
On February 11 evening, some youths were reportedly arrested by junta troops in Monywa town. In addition, more than 40 youths on the Monywa-Mandalay road were said to be arrested in the morning, so the people are concerned. Youths and their parents are worried that young people will be forced into the military due to the newly enacted Militia Conscription Law.
“No young people go out in Monywa city. The town looks deserted. Masonry, carpenters, iron and steel weaving industrial zone businesses are closed today as young workers are not coming (to work). No one is at the tea shops nor on the streets,” said a resident.
After the conscription law was announced on the night of February 10, residents said that the junta troops had been carrying out arbitrary arrests and recruitment to (civil) military service in the areas.
Since the declaration of (civil) military service law, the police and traffic police have been stopping the passersby, threatening and asking for money. It is also reported that the junta troops forced entry into homes and extorted.
