SAGAING DIVISION – In the aftermath of the hunger strike of political prisoners at Monywa Prison last September, the military council reportedly dismissed the prison authorities and imposed additional charges on the prisoners, according to Monywa People’s Strike Committee.
As the follow-up of the hunger strike in Monywa Prison from September 8 to 11 by political prisoners, five prison authorities; Chief Warden Win Min Latt, Deputy Warden Win Kyaw Moe, Dormitory Wardens Kyaw Moe and Nyunt Win, Cell In Charge Private Arkar Kyaw were dismissed from their positions for assenting to the requests of the strike and nine political prisoners who led the protest, including Mr. Wai Moe Naing (Student Leader) were prohibited from having their sentences reduced for one year and 17 other prisoners were prosecuted under Section 147 of the Penal Code.
Currently, newly appointed Monywa Prison authorities reportedly locked up Mr. Wai Moe Naing and another political prisoner in confinement and prosecuted those who led the strike under Section 147, which can punish up to 2 years in prison at Monywa Court, said Mr. Shin Thant of the Monywa People’s Strike Committee.
Mr. Lwin Moe Thant, a former political prisoner, told the media that the terrorist military council has made more restrictions on the admission of letters and parcels to political prisoners and has appointed new prison authorities to suppress the revolutionary spirit of the prisoners and violate human rights.
“Among the staff of the Internal Affairs Department, the prison wardens and staff are the worst. Now that the hunger strike has succeeded, new prison authorities are trying to suppress the political prisoners even more. Our people must take more actions for the oppressed political prisoners,” Mr. Lwin Moe Thant said.
Due to the injustice and violence of the authorities in Monywa Prison, 50 political prisoners including Mr. Wai Moe Naing went on a hunger strike for four days from September 8. The four requests of the prisoners were reportedly permitted by prison authorities on September 13.
