IRRAWADDY DIVISION-Residents who took part in the anti-military demonstration in Mawlamyine Gyun were asked by the members of the junta council for money every month and made to sign guarantees.
According to residents, members of the junta council have been chasing them and forcing them to sign a guarantee and ask for 5 to 10 lakh kyats in Mawlamyine Gyun since the second week of July.
“First, they came to my house and arrested me for participating in the protest. Then I was asked to sign a guarantee. Working together with the ward administrator and the police station, they demand to pay 600,000 kyats per month. And we have to sign every month at the police station,” said a resident of Mawlamyine Gyun.
In addition, it is known from the villagers of Nwayaykyaw and Photeelut, that they are threatened and demanding 10,00,000 Kyats per month, claiming that they participated in the protest against the junta.
“The village administrators appointed by the junta council are demanding money from the villagers.
Everyone in the village is an NLD supporter, so they are deliberately defrauding the whole village. They have to pay ten hundred thousand MMK a month. The whole village must pay together. It’s the same in Photeelut village. They are asking for dirty money. They are doing things like this,” said a resident of Nwayaykyaw Village.
Since the second week of July, in Mawlamyine Gyun city, the restaurants in the parking lot have been under surveillance by informers under the Junta’s Council every day, in addition to arresting and demanding money from local motorbikes traveling in the city, according to local residents.
