MANDALAY DIVISION – Three men arbitrarily detained with political charges in Myin Gyan Prison of Mandalay Division, were forcefully removed from the prison on the evening of May 21, and never returned to the prison, according to the sources close to the prison.
Early in the evening of May 21, the political prisoners from Taung Thar region, Mr. Kyaw Min Naing and Mr. Thet Maung Maung, were taken away using excessive force by military junta troops and police forces. Later on, around 9 p.m. Mr. Saing of Ngan Zun was also forcefully suppressed by prison authorities and staff and taken away.
Mr. Kyaw Min Naing and Mr. Thet Maung Maung were jailed for the Explosive Substances Act and Mr Saing for political charges as well. Since such incident of unlawful abduction from the prison had never happened before, many other prisoners were left in fear,” said a source within the prison.
These three detainees were arbitrarily arrested, charged with explosive act and other political charges and sentenced from 10 to over 20 years imprisonment since 2021. They have already spent more than two years in prison.
He continued that these three political prisoners had neither been returned to Myin Gyan Prison nor is there any related information regarding their whereabouts, causing concerns for their lives.
Other political detainees in Myin Gyan Prison were also listed with rumours roaming that they might be subjected to either transfer to another prison, send to labour camps, or additional charges.
Since May 20 before this violent abduction, the prison patrols were known to be taken over by the junta police and military, instead of the usual prison authorities.
With the amnesty announced on May 3, 217 political prisoners were released from Myin Gyan Prison, however, six of them were taken back captive by the junta troops.
