MANDALAY DIVISION – The junta forces have been torturing political prisoners in Myingyan Prison for leaking the inmates’ conditions and hardships to the media. As of May 24, eleven prisoners have been taken out of the prison dormitory by junta troops, according to the assistance groups for political prisoners.
Since May 21, the junta forces have been torturing political prisoners in Myingyan Prison. On May 21 and 22, seven inmates; Mr Thet Maung and Mr. Kyaw Min Naing from Taungthar Town, Mr. Kyaw Myo Tint and Mr. Zaw Zaw Aung from Mandalay City, Mr. Kyaw Zin Oo from Myingyan City, and Mr. Oakkar from Monywa City, were reportedly taken out of their cells.
On May 23 and 24, four more political detainees; Mr. Zaw Hlaing and Mr. Soe Yazar Tun Lwin from Monywa City, Mr. Min Ye Htwe (aka Min Thwe), and Mr. Kyaw Soe Tint from Mandalay, were called out for interrogations, as announced by Monywa People’s Strike Committee.
“Rumors say that the junta forces accused the political detainees of sneaking in a cell phone into the prison and have been torturing and interrogating the inmates they suspected,” said the leader of Monywa People’s Strike Committee and released political detainee, Mr. Shin Thant.
He also mentioned that the follow-up situations, regarding the political detainees being taken out and tortured by junta forces, are still unknown. The lives of the prisoners who were taken out of their cells for interrogation are in danger, and the military group does not provide life insurance to those they are torturing.
Mr. Oakkar from Monywa reportedly was killed during the interrogations, but the junta regime has not yet released any specified news or returned his body to the family, according to the statement of the Monywa Strike Committee.
“Today (on May 24) morning, the Director-General and Director of Prisons Department arrived at Myingyan Prison and continue persecuting and interrogating the political prisons,” stated Monywa People’s Strike Committee.
In addition, people who are assisting political prisoners said that fully armed soldiers were guarded both outside and inside of Myingyan Prison and also confiscated walkie-talkies from prison guards.
The remaining political prisoners at Myingyan Prison have been on hunger strike since May 22 against the military regime’s illegal extraction and torture of inmates, according to the close families and friends of the detainees.
In Myingyan Prison, there are more than 200 political detainees from Monywa, Mandalay, Myingyan, and Taungthar regions, who have been illegally arrested and imprisoned by the junta regime, including the Prime Minister of Sagaing Division, Dr. Myint Naing.
