MYANMAR – Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management (MoHADM) under National Unity Government (NUG) has reported on May 18 that 455 people have died due to Cyclone Mocha in Myanmar, according to the data compiled as of May 17.
The death toll due to the deadly storm was the highest in Rakhine State, 431 people followed by 15 in Magway, 4 in Sagaing, one each in Yangon, Ayeyarwady and Mandalay divisions and two in Shan State.
Moreover, due to the strongest Cyclone Mocha, 49 buildings, 26 roads, bridges and lampposts and 42,300 acres of agricultural lands were devastated in 13 townships of Sagaing Division. In Magway Division, 91 buildings, 8 roads, bridges and lampposts and 217 acres of agricultural lands were destroyed in 11 townships, while 1,428 buildings from eight townships in Chin State were destroyed, according to MoHADM’s report.
The National Unity Government (NUG) has provided an initial grant for emergency reliefs; 13 million kyats for Rakhine State, 10 million kyats for Chin State, 760,000 Kyats for Cyclone Emergency Preparedness Kits for 140 vulnerable families in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. It is being implemented to provide the emergency food needs in Magway Division.
As of May 17, the NUG had allocated its budget for humanitarian issues; 19,907,000 kyats to support the bereaved family members, 13,450,000 kyats to provide the emergency food needs in Sagaing Division, 100,000 kyats were given to support a person injured by the strong wind in Yangon Division.
Currently, detailed information about the death of Rohingyas due to the storm surge on the ground is still being investigated.
“The list of Rohingya who lost their lives by the Cyclone Mocha is being collected by young students and young philanthropists. So far, everything has not been completed. It is estimated that the number of dead Rohingya is close to 500. We are still collecting it,” said a source on the ground.
