KAREN STATE – The Karen National Union (KNU) and its alliances have gained more control in the southeast part of Myanmar and are directly threatening the transportation route between Yangon and Naypyidaw since the military coup.
According to the report by KPSN, the KNU-KNLA and their alliances have seized 62 junta camps as of July 2023, and the junta’s control is gradually diminishing.
Currently, 370 junta schools are under the guidance of KNU’s Education Department. Despite the junta council’s heavy artillery shelling and airstrikes, they have been unable to retain their camps or controlled areas. The KNLA and its allies are expanding their controlled areas and are now directly threatening the transportation corridor between Yangon and Naypyidaw.
However, there are currently 637,414 internally displaced persons (IDPs), a number that has increased by 18% since February. To help them, an urgent need for 42 million US dollars has arisen.
From February 2021 to July 2023, the junta council has fired 1,178 heavy artillery shells and killed 88 civilians. Another 342 have been wounded, and the junta council has also carried out 417 airstrikes. These attacks have resulted in the deaths of 41 innocent civilians and injuries to 145 others.
