ASEAN – Retno Marsudi, the minister of foreign affairs of Indonesia, the rotating chairman of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), admitted that the meeting on Myanmar issues which is expected to be held on October 31, is not close to being held.
In order to solve Myanmar’s crisis, Indonesia has discussed with all of the responsible persons from both opposing organizations, either in person or by phone more than 180 times within one year of Indonesia’s chairman term. But it is still far away for the inclusive meeting on Myanmar issues.
“Even though we (Indonesia parliamentarians) have tried to engage in Myanmar’s issues in various ways more than 180 times by discussing with the responsible persons from National Unity Government (NUG) and from the junta council. But according to the responses, it was not possible to hold the inclusive meeting. We have asked both NUG and the junta council to hold the meeting without any pre-preparation conditions. But we didn’t get any response with a positive point of view. We will keep trying without giving up as the door isn’t closed completely,” said Marsudi during 7th ASEAN Media Forum held in Jakarta.
Only two months have left for the rotating chairman term of Indonesia. Laos will be the next rotating chairman in 2024.
