INDONESIA – Indonesia President Joko Widodo said that ASEAN won’t be allowed to become hostage to Myanmar crisis and urged the ASEAN leaders to not follow the trends of competition while the geopolitical tensions are rising.
“We must continue fighting and we must not become hostage due to Myanmar crisis. ASEAN will continue to create peace, stability and prosperity,” the president said at the closing press conference of the 43rd ASEAN Leaders Summit held in Jakarta from Tuesday to Thursday.
ASEAN leaders have been struggling to resolve the Myanmar crisis that started after the military removed the democratically elected government and staged a coup in February 2021.
The ASEAN leaders have decided that the past, present and future chair of the association will be helping the special ASEAN convoy to Myanmar.
Mr. Joko Widodo also said that Indonesia, as the ASEAN chair, had made 145 contacts with over 70 stakeholders in the Myanmar crisis.
The role of ASEAN chair for 2024 was transferred to Sonexay Siphandone, Prime Minister of Laos at the closing ceremony of the ASEAN Summit.
