TANINTHARYI DIVISION – Family members of some prisoners in Myeik prison said that the prisoners will be being moved to Kawthoung and Mawlamyine prisons.
A family member whom received a call from Myeik prison said that the prison staff called and informed on Wednesday morning (February 14) that the inmate will be transferred.
“They told me on the phone that there are too many people in the prison, so they have to transfer the inmates,” said a female family member of the inmate who did not want to be named.
The prison staff informed that the number of transferring prisoners is 300 in total and they will be transported by sea, the family of inmate added.
The family members are hoping to see the inmates before being transferred but they were not allowed to visit the prisoners privately.
A man from family of other inmate said,” When I was informed, they said that they would move today. They told me to wait in front of the prison if we want to see our family members. I have been waiting since I got the phone call.”
“At present, family members of inmates have been waiting in front of Myeik prison, along the road and the prison side is heavily guarded,” explained a Myeik resident who lives near the prison.
It was reportedly known that there are three traffic policemen on the road in front of Myeik prison and eight policemen along the road leading to the prison.
The barbed wire berry gates have been placed at the entrance to Myeik prison, and the family members of the prisoners have been waiting in line from outside the berry gate, the local resident said.
The Myeik Prison was contacted regarding the transfer of prisoners, but no reply was received.
